IKEA Smart Blinds: First Looks (Unboxing and Walkthrough)

Follow me @homekitgeek on twitter and instagram www.homekitgeek blog www.facebook.com/homekitgeek If you're interested in adding some new devices to your smarthome, please consider using my Amazon.com show as a starting point as it really does help to support me in continuing to create new content. https://www.amazon.com/shop/netmanchris IKEA has been making a lot of waves this year as they continue to release products that change the smarthome landscape by taking traditionally higher-priced products and making them IKEA affordable. The IKEA Smart blinds are the latest in this chain of products to hit the market and I believe this is going to be a huge win for IKEA in that they are making products available in the less than $200 range which was previously unheard of in smart blinds. (Yes - there were aftermarket addons like Soma but they still required you to add the actual blinds themselves which is not the case with the IKEA blinds ). The Fyrtur blinds, which are a blackout blind, is the first of the two models which we expect to see from IKEA in the near future. Although these blinds are not customizable in either color or total width, they do come in enough sizes to make them usable by the majority of customers. The one thing which I would have loved to see would be for IKEA to release with full Homekit and Alexa support right from the start. Unfortunately, the blinds are only controllable through the IKEA HomeSmart (Tradfri) app or through GoogleAssistant if you connect it to GoogleHome. Yes - You can always connect it through HomeBridge which I appreciate, but that's not the same as native support. Although the software for the blinds is a little bit rough right now, I'm expecting IKEA to release firmware and software updates in the next few months which continue to improve the experience for all of us. One of my smart home goals has always been to get automatic blinds and with IKEA, this is finally in an affordable range. Let me know what you think in the comments!
