"We Want Magsaysay" - Ramon Magsaysay Presidential Campaign Song (1953)

English: In 1953, Defense Secretary Ramon Magsaysay resigned from his post and decided to run under the Nacionalista Party against the incumbent President Elpidio Quirino. Magsaysay’s campaign is well-rembered for its populist nature, effectively portraying himself as a president for the common man. Raul Manglapus was chosen to head the “Magsaysay for President Movement” as national coordinator. His liveliest contributions to the campaign were the campaign songs “Mambo Magsaysay” and “We Want Magsaysay”, which had the voters humming, dancing and thinking. Manglapus sang both songs at a try-out to the Guy himself. Magsaysay found the marching song “We Want Magsaysay” too formal and old-fashioned, preferring the “Mambo Magsaysay” which seems more catchy due to the combination of English and vernacular lyrics, along with fact that its style is more in line with the musical trends of the 50’s. Ramon Magsaysay will eventually win the elections and serve as president until his untimely demise in an plane crash in Cebu on March 17, 1957. --------------- SOURCES Original audio recording:    • WE WANT MAGSAYSAY (1953) - Rene Antonio   Images: “Flag of the President of the Republic of the Philippines (1951-1965)”.
