The first question asked was - What is the difference between tantra and mantra. Om Swami says that there were three integral parts for rituals which aided in one’s awakening, and they were Tantra, Mantra and Yantra. The original meaning of Tantra according to the dictionary is an apparatus, a set of things. Yantra was the visual representation of the energy field and it always represented a particular deity. Mantra was the sonic energy of the visual representation. Tantra was the method used to attain it. Tantra always requires herbs and other physical objects to make it happen. He says, things that are done with the body is Tantra and things done with the mind is Mantra. In the word Yantra the letters Ya stood for ‘this’,’wisdom’and ‘opulence’. In mantra one prays to a deity but in Tantra the devotee wants to feel one with the deity. Om Swami says that there are no clear demarcations between mantra and Tantra as they are used in conjunction. Not all mantric practices use Tantra but almost ninety percent of all tantric practices use, mantra and a deity. The second question asked was - Is there any sadhana which will help put one’s bad karma behind? Om Swami says that the word karma has two meanings. One meaning is destiny where an action has been performed due to which one is facing the consequences now and the other meaning is action. He says, there are many methods to heal oneself of one’s past actions. It can be done by building one’s mindfulness and patience in such a way that the consequences faced will not hurt one. One can also practice kindness and compassion towards oneself and others. Om Swami says, the one way to rise above the past is to let go of the past and focus on the present and to understand that it is sometimes ok to make mistakes. But mistakes can be fixed by apologising and making amends and by not repeating them again. If any person feels that there is some karma which cannot be undone, then they should have the courage to practise repentance according to the scriptures and by owning up their mistakes. Ego is the only thing that halts a person from asking for forgiveness. Healing begins when one can live their life in loving thoughts , compassion, empathy, positivity and creativity. This would make their problems insignificant and then it would not matter so much. Listen to the full discourse to get an in-depth knowledge on these topics.
