Dr. Broome: My preferred knee implant is from Smith and Nephew and the reason being is they are the only ones that have this black shiny component called oxidized zirconium or oxinium. When I was in South Carolina at my former practice, the Clemson biomedical research group had a lab just right above us and they had they looked at implant retrievals that they had taken out of patients and they did a lot of research on these. This was not industry funded so it wasn't like a company paying them to show the results. They were just looking at all comers. When they took different knees, from different companies they would scratch them, they would try to wear them down, they would abuse them, this particular material held up better than all in all the studies that we have, it shows that this material is not going to wear down and it's going to last longer.
