Deconstructing Japanese Baseball's Dumbest Controversy

The year is 2013, after 2 years of historically low offense, Wladimir Balentien comes out of nowhere to hit 60 home runs, breaking the NPB record. Earlier that season, NPB Commissioner Ryozo Kato found himself in hot water for not informing the public about the change in the ball, claiming he had no idea about it. Subsequent reporting found that he, in fact, did know about it, and had been receiving several updates from Mizuno about the balls before he approved them. He would step down before the Japan Series. Thanks to that Balentien’s home run record is often assigned an asterisk. Not considered equivalent to the feats of Sadaharu Oh, Randy Bass, Tuffy Rhodes, Alex Cabrera, Hiromitsu Ochiai or Munetaka Murakami. Balentien was just the result of a freak year, and a commissioner trying to save his skin, that’s it, that’s all. Hell, I’ve been guilty of saying that in the past, many times over.
