This piece (World Premier) is a structured composition with improvisation on the theme of the butterfly. A beautiful, delicate, mysterious and spiritual creature, the butterfly in Chinese legend is tinged with melancholy. It symbolise changes and evolution, connects people and spirits, the living and after-life, heaven and earth. Many people are familiar with story of the Butterfly Lovers 梁山伯与祝英台, a Chinese equivalent of Romeo and Juliet, in which lovers who could not be together in this world became butterflies in the otherworld. Another is the disorientation of philosopher Zhuangzi/Zhuang zhou who Dreamt He was A Butterfly 庄周梦蝶. When he suddenly awoke, he no longer knew whether he was Zhuang Zhou who had dreamt he was a butterfly, or a butterfly dreaming that he was Zhuang Zhou. Between Zhuang Zhou and the butterfly there must be some distinction! He calls it the "Transformation of Things". Recently, I lost my dearest mother and was unable to bid farewell to her in China under Covid. Also, a dear musician friend recently lost his beloved brother and had to withdraw from this concert. This raw and humble work is dedicated to them.
