The Santa Maria hour 9. A step by step one hour session tutorial. In this video, the work during hour 9 is presented. I placed only 7 strips in total. That seems little, but I pay due attention to the initial planking. Again, it avoids too many unnecessary adjustments or padding work later. I first made sure that both the starboard and port sides had the same number of 5 planks, starting from just below the bulwark. As the last part of this hour, I already started attaching the lower planks on the starboard side. From there, work then continued upwards. As you can see in the first part of the full footage, I taper the boards on the inside. That way they fit better against the previous plank and you can already make a bit of a curve without any crevices showing. I also adjust the ribs where necessary, so that each plank fits against the previous one as nicely as possible and the hull already has a very nice shape. We do the same for the fourth plank. I already cut off the protruding parts of the previous planks, so that the extension of the next plank can continue to follow its natural curve. This way, I spent almost 20 minutes on two planks, as you can see in the first part of the accelerated film view. In the third part of this hour, I also placed the fifth plank on the starboard side. So currently both sides of the ship have five planks of the first planking. In the last part of this hour's footage, I already placed the 2 lower planks running from the bow to the keel. I'll be working on this additional project in 1-hour shifts so that I can fully chart the building process.
