Encephalitis: Can we save our little ones in 2020? | Episode 101 TheDeshBhakt | Akash Banerjee

A few months ago, over a hundred children lost their lives in Bihar's Muzaffarpur. While we have moved on in our lives, hundreds of children continue to suffer in Bihar, Assam, and Uttar Pradesh due to the same disease- Encephalitis. In Episode 101 of TheDeshBhakt, we try to figure out the reason for this crisis. What we, as common Indian citizens, could demand from our Government to fight disease such as Encephalitis? Following are the steps Indiann Government could take in order to prevent further Encephalitis related deaths: 1. Set up a national scheme guaranteeing free medicines and diagnostics to ensure universal access to entire range of essential drugs and diagnostics at all public health facilities across India. This would upscale work initiated by government where the 2014 Union Budget emphasized “Health for All” via free drug services and free diagnosis services. 2. Adoption of “Charter of Patients’ Rights” which protects the rights of patients to information, safety and quality of services and provides grievance redress mechanisms in case of violations. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare had sought inputs for the same in August 2018 and this needs to be finalized and rolled out. 3. Government should bring new drugs and drugs for treatment of rare diseases under price regulation. 4.
