Filmmakers Don't Need to do Everything

As a filmmaker, a creator, you might feel like you need to do everything. You might feel like if you aren’t the one to come up with the concept, film it, direct it, shoot it, light it, edit it, color it, publish it then you can’t take credit for the work. You can’t feel whole as a creator. The truth is that you can work with a team and you can create solo. Both paths are totally acceptable and you can do both. Early on I thought I needed to film and edit everything, but when I made a piece for vans and truth during the Vans US Open of surfing I learned otherwise. I had filmed interviews with world famous surfers, filmed broll coverage of the event on the ground and was able to capture a few surfing shots, but nothing close to the cable cameras and guys filming from jet skis. When the client and myself looked at the edit we asked ourselves how can we make this 10x better? One of the ways was to somehow gain access to that amazing surf footage from the team filming the surfing competition. Vans hooked it up with that footage and the video came out significantly better than the original. And I was proud to put it on my portfolio. I didn’t claim I filmed that footage but I was responsible for directing and editing the video. The point is that if you work with other people you can still put that content in your portfolio. You don’t have to do everything, just give credit where credit is due.
