Pioneering treatment for firesetters | Celebrating impact

Every week in the UK, criminal #firesetting results in 65 casualties and costs of over £40 million. In this video, see how Professor Theresa Gannon's groundbreaking work with deliberate #firesetters has resulted in the first effective treatment programme for offenders, which is being adopted by Australia, North America and Europe. Theresa's research looks at the reasons why people set fires deliberately, examining characteristics that distinguish firesetters from other offenders. This was used to develop the first theoretical framework to explain deliberate firesetting and the first treatment programme. 75 offenders at HMP Swaleside have been through the programme, and they have since seen a reduced number of fires. In fact, those who completed the programme were 3.5 times less likely to be interested in starting deliberate fires. 450 professionals have been trained to provide the treatment so far in the UK.
