Long Tall Sally - Guitar Tutorial (4K) - Rickenbacker 325c58 - Gretsch Country Gentleman

Long Tall Sally was a favorite in the Beatles' live setlist for ages. In fact, the group recorded Long Tall Sally four times for the BBC all between April 1st and August 13th 1963. After having it in their repertoire for so long, the group must have finally decided to record it properly for a record release. March 1st, 1964 was a three an a half hour session and the last day of recording for the A Hard Days Night LP. The session started at 10:30 am with the newly-penned Im Happy Just To Dance With You and by 11:30 it was finished. After this, the group performed their one and only take of Long Tall Sally with George Martin on piano. By noon everything was done; absolutely zero overdubs were needed! After that, work began on I Call Your Name. THE GUITAR PARTS: Lennon played his 1964 Rickenbacker 325. A Chuck Berry style blues shuffle riff is played essentially throughout the entire song with exceptions to the bends at the starts of the verses and the first solo. During the solo Lennon sticks primarily in the minor pentatonic scale. Take note of a couple more things here... - The third bend (0:04) before the first verse starts is played differently than every other one in the song. - The crazy lick at 1:55! Lennon finishes with a fiery G7 played in a D7 shape at the 7t fret Harrison played his 1963 Gretsch Country Gentleman. While Harrison also does a Chuck Berry style blues shuffle, the pattern he plays is different than what Lennon is doing. Lennon plays the standard 5-6-7-6 while Harrison is essentially playing it in reverse with 7-6-5. - At 0:37, He repeats the descending 14-13 phrase a few times. This only happens here and nowhere else in the song. - Notice the flub during the beginning of Harrison's solo at 1:07! - During the second half of the shout section, chord slaps very similar to Some Other Guy are played The outro is simply a chromatic line played down lower on the neck. He finishes with a G9 chord GEAR USED: Rickenbaker 325c58 Gretsch Country Gentleman Vox AD100VTH
