Whichever candidate receives the most votes wins. This means that sometimes candidates can win without a majority or 50% of the votes. Ranked-choice voting is an electoral system that ensures a candidate receives a majority of the votes because voters rank candidates by preference, picking their 1st, 2nd, and 3rd choices and so on. If a candidate receives more than 50% of the vote in the first round, then the race is over and that candidate wins. If not, then a second round of counting commences. The candidate with the fewest first-place votes is eliminated, and their votes are reallocated to the voter's second choice candidate. These rounds continue until one candidate has a majority.
