1996 NBA Finals Game 4 Chicago Bulls at Seattle SuperSonics, June 12, 1996

CHI 86, SEA 107 - On June 12, 1996, the Seattle SuperSonics hosted the Chicago Bulls for Game 4 of the NBA Finals at the KeyArena, determined to stave off elimination. In a must-win scenario, the Sonics delivered a spirited performance, marked by their increased defensive intensity and balanced offensive attack. Gary Payton, showcasing his prowess as one of the league's top defenders, held Michael Jordan to 23 points, a lower total than his previous games. Shawn Kemp led the Sonics with 25 points and 11 rebounds, while Hersey Hawkins added 21 points, providing the much-needed scoring depth. Seattle's defense was particularly effective, forcing the Bulls into uncharacteristic turnovers and poor shooting. This collective effort enabled the Sonics to secure a 107-86 victory, cutting the Bulls' series lead to 3-1. The Chicago Bulls, despite the loss, remained composed and focused on their ultimate goal. Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen combined for 42 points, but the team struggled with shooting efficiency and cohesion against Seattle's reinvigorated defense. Dennis Rodman continued to be a force on the boards with 14 rebounds, but his efforts were not enough to overcome the Sonics' relentless pressure. The loss marked Chicago's first defeat in the Finals, momentarily halting their march towards the championship. Phil Jackson's squad recognized the need to adjust and regroup, understanding that while they still held a commanding 3-1 series lead, the SuperSonics had proven they were capable of turning the tide. The victory rejuvenated the Seattle crowd and instilled hope that the Sonics could extend the series further. Sidenote: Although many argue that Gary Payton prevented Michael Jordan from scoring effectively, I tracked the instances where Jordan made a shot against Payton, and he actually shot 50% in those situations. Jordan's misses were primarily on contested shots with 2 or 3 defenders, with Hersey Hawkins being the primary defender and Payton, Schrempf, or Kemp providing support on Jordan's weak side.
