Clavier and Bach | Netherlands Bach Society

'Clavier' in Bach's time can refer to various keyboard instruments. A harpsichord, clavichord, virginal or a fortepiano: Bach was familiar with all these instruments. But what exactly are the characteristics of these instruments and how do they differ from each other? In this special video, Siebe Henstra and Leo van Doeselaar show a range of various keyboard instruments from Bach's time - and later periods. Bach often used the term 'Clavier' in his compositions for keyboard instruments, but he usually did not specify what type of instrument he had in mind. The question of which instrument a particular work should be played on was probably also considered less important in his day than it is now. In the performances of the Netherlands Bach Society we play on authentic instruments (or replicas). These instruments are discussed in this video, but also their successors in later periods. Recorded for the project All of Bach on June 12th 2020 at Doesburg and Hilversum, The Netherlands.
