Cmde Srikant B Kesnur joined the prestigious National Defence Academy, Khadakvasla, near Pune, in Jul 1982, as a sixteen-year-old, standing 25th in the All-India Merit for the same. Four years later, after intensive training and graduation in Science (BSc, JNU), he was commissioned into the Indian Navy’s Executive branch on 01 Jul 1986. Some years later, in 1992, he specialised in Naval Communications and Electronic Warfare. In his 36 years’ service in the navy, he has spent long time at sea and held numerous operational and ship appointments. The most coveted of these were being the Captain (Commanding Officer) of INS Vindhyagiri, an Anti-Submarine frigate & Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) Control Ship, from 2004 to 2006 and the Navy’s only Landing Platform Dock (LPD), the INS Jalashwa, from 2013 to 2014. He was commended by the Chief of the Naval Staff in 2002 for his contribution in the field of Electronic Warfare. Cmde Srikant has been involved with Professional Military Education (PME) and training for much of his naval career. He has attended all important career courses such as the Defence Services Staff College, Wellington and the Naval Higher Command Course at the College of Naval Warfare, Mumbai. He has also attended the Joint Air Warfare Course at College of Air Warfare, Secunderabad and short capsule courses on Electronic Warfare (Maritime Operations) in Israel and on UN Crisis Management in Sweden. He has the unique distinction of being a faculty member at three prestigious institutions - the National Defence Academy, Khadakvasla, at the Defence Services Staff College, Wellington, near Ooty, where he was also the Head of Naval Training Team (HOTT) and at the Naval War College at Goa where he the Deputy Commandant and Senior Directing Staff (analogous to Dean of Studies). He was, from Oct 2008 to Mar 2012, the Defence Adviser (DA) at Nairobi, Kenya with Kenya, Tanzania, Seychelles, Eritrea and Somalia as his area of responsibility. This assignment enabled him to get a ringside view of the many facets of diplomacy, international defence cooperation and issues such as piracy in the region. He retired from the Service on 30 Jun 22.
