THE VOCATION OF ST. CLARE (Santa Clara) (Santa Chiara) In honor of Saint Clare, which is celebrated on 11 August each year, we publish an excerpt from the silent film "Frate Sole" (1918) with the musical accompaniment and improvisation that Robert Kovács performed on the organ of the Church of St. Francis in Aleppo (Syria) on November 16, 2019 for the Terra Sancta Organ Festival (TSOF), celebrating the 800 years from St. Francis Pilgrimage of Peace in the Middle East . Robert Kovács is the principal organist of the Vienna Symphonic Orchestra, the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. The figure of Saint Clare takes a fundamental place in the life of Saint Francis of Assisi and also in this film. With great knowledge of Franciscan sources the screenwriter gives great importance to the role of Claire: it is she who pushes Francis towards the leper, using the same words that Francis wrote in his Testament when retelling the beginning of his vocation: “what seemed bitter to me was changed into sweetness of soul and body”. It was a great production, which achieved enormous success. [ITALIANO] In onore di Santa Chiara, che si festeggia l’11 agosto di ogni anno, pubblichiamo “La vocazione di Santa Chiara”, un estratto del film muto “Frate Sole” del 1918 con l’accompagnamento musicale e l’improvvisazione che Robert Kovács ha eseguito sull’organo della Chiesa di San Francesco ad Aleppo (Siria) il 16 novembre 2019 per il Terra Sancta Organ Festival (TSOF), in occasione delle celebrazioni per gli 800 anni del Pellegrinaggio di Pace di San Francesco in Medio Oriente. Robert Kovács è l’organista principale dell’Orchestra Filarmonica di Vienna, i famosi Wiener Philharmoniker. La figura di Santa Chiara occupa un posto fondamentale nella vita di San Francesco di Assisi e anche in questo film. Con una invenzione che mostra grande conoscenza delle fonti francescane, è Chiara che spinge Francesco ad abbracciare il lebbroso, e lo fa parafrasando le stesse parole che Francesco scriverà nel suo Testamento: “Ciò che ora ti sembra amaro, ti si cambierà in dolcezza di anima e di corpo”. Fu una grande produzione, che ottenne un enorme successo. Per questo film venne composta una colonna sonora da Luigi Mancinelli, la quale venne eseguita dal vivo con l’orchestra, perché a quel tempo non c’era ancora la possibilità tecnica di inserire un audio in un video. Il Terra Sancta Organ Festival in occasione delle celebrazioni per gli 800 anni del Pellegrinaggio di Pace di San Francesco in Medio Oriente ha presentato una edizione ridotta di questo film in tredici location in Giordania, Palestina, Israele, Cipro, Grecia, Siria e Libano, con il commento musicale dal vivo, improvvisato all’organo.
