As more and more states begin to legalize cannabis use, the popularity of medicinal marijuana has continued to grow as well. This has led many people to either try cannabis for the first time or to try a new method of using cannabis. Unfortunately, while it is uncommon, there are some people that can have negative reactions to THC. Some of these negative reactions can even lead to psychosis. While cannabis does have a variety of different health benefits, some people may be more at risk for psychotic episodes or other psychiatric disorders later in life if they use potent cannabis without moderation. Oftentimes people that are using cannabis too heavily are the ones who are more at risk, which is why it’s especially important to be aware of the potency of what you are using and how often you are using it. Here’s what you need to know about cannabis induced psychosis and some answers to common questions regarding the topic. Is There a Link Between Marijuana Use and Psychiatric Disorders? As cannabis use continues to grow in popularity across the country, more and more research is being done to study marijuana and its effects on the human body. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse , recent studies performed have found links between cannabis use and an increased risk of psychiatric disorders, such as psychosis, depression/anxiety, and more. There are a variety of different factors that go into how a person’s body will react to THC when they use it. When looking at how cannabis may affect someone psychologically, some of the factors that are examined include the potency of the THC being used and possible genetic dispositions to psychiatric disorders in the family of the person being observed. The reason that potential genetic dispositions are taken into account when examining how a person may react to cannabis is because a recent study also found that people who had psychiatric disorders in their genetics were at higher risk of developing one themselves if frequently smoking potent marijuana. It was also found that, while THC can be a possible trigger for psychosis, it is not the cause of it. Many substances are able to trigger symptoms of mental illnesses—for instance, cannabis possibly triggering psychosis in someone who unknowingly has schizophrenia. Another factor that may affect the reaction a person has to THC, other than their genetics, is the potency of the cannabis that is being consumed. That same study on cannabis use and links to psychiatric issues also found that in areas where high-potency marijuana is commonly accessible, such as Amsterdam and England, there were more cases of cannabis induced psychosis. That data seems to show that frequent use of high-THC or potent marijuana can also have an effect on the way that a person’s body may ultimately react. The age at which an individual’s cannabis consumption was at its most frequent also plays a factor in how a person may react to potent THC, as well as whether they are at risk for psychiatric disorders later in life. THC has been seen to affect the areas of the brain that are responsible for psychosis episodes and hallucinations. Some research is beginning to show links between frequent cannabis use in adolescence and an increased risk of developing psychiatric disorders later in life, such as depression and anxiety. Other research suggests that the risk for psychosis could even double in those who have genetic predispositions to psychiatric disorders and smoke cannabis too frequently during their adolescence.
