Guterres in Kazan: A PR coup for Russia or a statement on the power of basic diplomacy? | DW News

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres hasn't been in Russia for two years. But he went there this week to tell Russia's President Putin that the world needs peace in Ukraine. And not just any peace, but one based on respect for the territorial integrity of the country Russia is currently invading and attempting to carve up. Branding Putin a criminal, Kyiv condemned the secretary general for going. And Estonia's foreign minister accused him of handing the Russian president a propaganda victory. Mr Guterres though sees his trip to the summit of BRICS nations as an opportunity to engage with countries representing half the world's population. He called for an end to the wars in the Middle East and Ukraine, and for the implementation of a UN initiative to prevent future conflicts. We spoke with international law expert Mary Ellen O’Connell, and with Patrick Stewart, a Senior Fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. 00:00 Introduction 01:24 Interview Mary Ellen O’Connell, international law expert 08:59 Interview Patrick Stewart, Carnegie Endowment for International Peace Subscribe: https://www.youtube.com/user/deutsche...
