Here is the original audio as recorded by John’s Grandma Lee in the early #1990s. What follows is an abbreviated telling of Mr. Murphy‘s first adventure! Welcome to Masterpiece Theater! And today Mr. Murphy gets his very first friends. “I’m here all by myself! I need someone to talk to. I need someone to share my friendship and love to here at the house. I must find someone to share the rest of my life with… I know! I’ll go to a pet store.” So Mr. Murphy finished his dinner. He washed his plate and little cup. And then he said, “I’m off to the pet store!” Along the road he ran across his neighbor. He had very fine neighbors! “Mr. Murphy, where are you going?” “Oh, I’m so happy! I’m going to go find me a family,” Mr. Murphy announced. “What do you mean Mr. Murphy?” “Just what I said. I’m Mr. Murphy. That’s all. But soon there’ll be new additions to the family.” The neighbor was stunned. “Gosh, Mr. Murphy are you going to get married? “No.” “Are you going to adopt some children?” “No.” “Well then what are you going to do?” “I’m going to try and find me some pets,” Mr. Murphy said with a smile. “Oh! Ok, I understand. You’re going to find some pets – some friends. Having a pet is so wonderful! You could get a fish.” “Oh, I don’t know!” “Well, you go to the pet store, and see what you find. Look around! Don’t buy the first thing you see. You do some shopping. “ “Can you recommend a nice store?” “Well… there’s a nice store there by Safeway!” “Ok!" Mr. Murphy took the streetcar downtown, and when he reached the stop closest to the Safeway he pulled the cord to get off. There, just like his neighbor had said, was the Pet Palace, a grand establishment with all sorts of animals playing in the windows. Mr. Murphy stepped inside. The manager Mr. Feathers and his assistant Ms. Minerva bustled about, helping animals and customers alike. Mr. Feathers said, “Ms. Minerva! When you’re finished with doggie’s bath and shampoo, can you bring him out for this gentleman to see?” “Ok, Mr. Feathers I’ll be right there!” Ms. Minerva hollered back over the yips and yaps of the animals. Mr. Murphy added, “Well, I wanted two pets.” “I’ll tell you what…” Mr. Feathers said. “What can you suggest?” “How about another dog?” Mr. Murphy shook his head. “No. I think …. I’ll maybe get a cat. I don’t know. Do you think I should get a boy or girl?” “Well… what is your name sir?” “Mr. Murphy.” “Well I’ll tell you, they’re both good pets! They mind their master. And they’re very clean.” “Well, first let me see a ‘lil boy.” “I have just the cat you want!” So here comes this little boy cat. “What do you call him?” “Right now we call him kitty.” Here comes this boy cat. He is mean and scratching! A right ornery self. And hissing and everything! Mr. Murphy was startled. “Mr. Manager! This kitty isn’t very tame is he?” “No. He’s still very wild.” “Well…ok … let’s pass on him. Bring me a girl cat! How many do you have?” “I have three. A brown, white and spotted one.” “I like them all! But bring me the spotted one.” She was so meek, quiet, and easygoing. So when Mr. Murphy petted her, she purred and licked his fingers. She was very gentle and nice. “What do you call her?” “We don’t have a name for her yet. But you can name her anything you like! We call her kitty.” “Ok. I’ll take her! Can you give me a toy so she won’t be lonely? And 5 pounds of cat food. What about the dog, is he ready?” “Ms. Minerva, is that dog ready?” Ms. Minerva hollered back, “Yes, sir. We’re drying him off right now. We’ll have him there in a minute.” Here he comes! A cute little small black dog. Just black as could be, with shiny little eyes. As soon as he came out wagging his tail, and saw Mr. Murphy, he knew Mr. Murphy had a lot of love and understanding for dogs and cats, and all pets. “It really has been a pleasure to wait on such a wonderful man as you!” Mr. Feathers said. “I’ll be back tomorrow to get a leash. It’s the law! I can’t get it now; I ran out of money. But I’ll tell you what, get it ready for me tomorrow. I’ll phone you, and tell you what time I’m going to come.” Honk! Honk! Into the cab goes Mr. Murphy with his new dog and cat, and were soon home. At first, the dog started to bark, and the cat meowed. But he settled them down. “Now, now, tomorrow I’ll be giving you a name. If I find one. If not, I’ll just call you Doggy and Kitty. Or maybe we’ll find a name … I don’t know! But in the meantime, this is your first night here. I want to welcome you to my house. Because now we are a family!” Stay connected with us!
