Cleaning & Reusing LECA + Inorganic Media | My Cleaning Protocol | Keeping Semi-Hydro Successful

Hi Everyone, It's Annabel, welcome back to my channel! Today we are going through some of my steps in cleaning LECA before I reuse, to ensure no viruses, fungi or bacteria are transmitted between orchids, while also physically cleaning off dead algae and roots that may have stuck to the LECA, as well as removing salt build up. I had a question recently on my cleaning protocol, and this is what I do at the moment, after a few years of trial and error. A step not filmed here is me rinsing off the LECA straight out of the pots, but as you can see, this still leaves alot of residue. Since I then have so many subsequent steps, I don't worry too much about this. Most of the dirt you see coming off after bleaching is dead algae. I've found the bleach/ boiling two pronged approach gives me much cleaner LECA than either step alone. The rinses and soaks are also vital, and I strongly suggest investing in various sieves/ colanders, and having a dedicated LECA bowl and saucepan, to prevent irritated significant others ;-) I have talked about my rinsing steps for new LECA before here:    • Semi-Hydro for Orchids: Discussions o...   The information displayed in popups here on bleach solutions and concentrations for disinfecting and killling pathogens was mainly taken from this book resource : Infection Prevention and Control of Epidemic- and Pandemic-Prone Acute Respiratory Infections in Health Care. Geneva: World Health Organization; 2014. Here is a link to the E-resource: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NB... If you go through reputable sources on google, includind the CDC, a few sources mention 1000ppm of active chlorine bleach as being the minimum to kill viruses, which according to the above resource, is a 0.10% bleach solution. There isn't loads of info on bleach solution strength for plants, but since we are using this as a disinfectant, then removing from the LECA before a boiling stage, this should be fine. It has never caused me any issues anyway. This may appear long winded, but it's just my method and what I've found to work best for me, after a few years of trying different things. The bleach seems really good at removing algae too! Hope it helps! ___________________________________________________________ Instagram:   / the.orchid.room   ___________________________________________________________ ❀ My Orchid Room ❀ UK Spare Bedroom Temps- 18-35C Humidity 50-75%.
