2013 QUT Grand Challenge Lecture - Sustainable Buildings & Infrastructure - A Kiviniemi

Find out more at http://ow.ly/mfmd2 The built environment is our largest asset and buildings consume about 40% of the world's energy. Nevertheless, many building design and construction projects are beset by poor quality, cost blowouts and schedule overruns, and often the performance of buildings does not meet the clients' requirements. To address these problems, the UK Government published a new construction strategy in May 2011. Building information modelling (BIM) is a crucial part of the strategy, but technology is only part of the problem and the solution. Fundamental changes are also needed in procurement systems, business models and work processes. This lecture discusses the emerging global trends in sustainable building design, construction and operation. Arto Kiviniemi is a Professor of Digital Architectural Design at the University of Salford in Manchester. He is currently working on several research and development projects in the areas of sustainable building, building information modelling and integrated design. Before joining the University of Salford in 2010, Arto had been the Vice President for Innovation and Development at the engineering firm Olof Granlund (2008-2010) and a research professor at the VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland (1996-2008). From 1972 to 1996, Arto was an architect in several architecture firms in Finland. Among many awards in his distinguished career, Arto received the Fiatech CETI (Celebration of Engineering & Technology Innovation) 2008 Outstanding Researcher Award.
