COP27 - Are Microgrids the next big thing?

The world is undergoing a transformation in the way energy is generated and supplied. Microgrids are at the forefront of the revolution. The panel will discuss the social, economic and environmental impact of microgrids. New technologies are essential for 'ensuring access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all'. (Sustainable Development Goal 7) SDG 7 is being achieved at a massive scale with the number of people with access to electricity having doubled in the last 20 years. However, more than 700 million people still do not have access; the majority of those in sub-Saharan Africa. The definition of ‘access’ is also problematic as many people who technically have access do not have the amount, quality and consistency of power they need. The fight against human-created climate change is much more than mitigation and adaptation. It is also about transferring ‘environmentally sound technologies’ that enable sustainable development without releasing greenhouse gases at the levels that have caused the climate chaos we see today. Microgrids powered by renewable sources and their contribution to meeting the sustainable development goals are an important way of enabling development without repeating the mistakes of the past. In this YouTube Live discussion, we will have a conversation about microgrids with panel members from the UK, Uganda, Indonesia and India. We’ll describe what microgrids are, why they are ‘environmentally sound technologies’ and how they contribute to achieving the sustainable development goals. Presenters: Professor Jon Lovett - University of Leeds, UK. Dr Annisa Astari - Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia (UPI), Indonesia. Dr Saut Sagala - Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB), Indonesia. Dr Elisabeth Rianawati – Resilience Development Initiative, Indonesia. Sreya Ghosh – Visva-Bharati University (VBU), India. Flavia Ajambo - Centre for Research in Energy and Energy Conservation (CREEC), Uganda. Dr Mary Suzan Abbo – Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation, Uganda. Prof Amit Hazra - Visva-Bharati University, India. Times: The event is taking place at 10:00 am in the UK, 15:30 in India, 17:00 in Indonesia and 13:00 in Uganda.
