Well, I have a story for you that suggests otherwise. It’s the very tragic murder of Ruthie Mae McCoy. Grad student, Helen Lyle and her best friend Bernadette are working on their thesis on urban legends and folkloric. This is how she learns about the Candyman legend. On Candyman, there’s a character named Ruthie Jean. She was taking a bath, when she heard a noise that sounded like someone was trying to bust through her wall. So, she called 911 and told them what she heard. They didn’t believe her because they thought that she was crazy. They didn’t understand what she was saying. She called 911 again and they still didn’t believe her. In the movie, Ruthie Jean’s neighbor, Anne Marie McCoy heard Ruthie’s screams and called 911, as well. Unfortunately, when they finally arrived, Ruthie was dead. Ruthie Jean’s death was based on the real life death of Ruthie Mae McCoy. Ruthie lived in a housing project called Grace Abbott Homes, which wasn’t far from Cabrini-Green. A great deal of the movie was shot at Cabrini Green. Just like the real Ruthie Mae McCoy, Ruthie Jean called the police, yet, she still died alone and they were both victims of the “bathroom-break ins” of the 80s.
