MUD-SPLASHING ELEPHANTS! Episode 8 of our Elephant Behaviour Series Muddiness is happiness to an elephant! They will take any opportunity to make the most out of muddy wallows where they can easily scoop up the mud with their impressive trunks or splash it around with their strong legs. It is no doubt enjoyable and fun for elephants to enjoy a good mud wallowing, but the act of mud splashing serves many greater health benefits for them too. The mud acts as a vital sunscreen to protect them from the harsh African sun, and it also helps keep them cooler during the hotter months. The mud also serves as a truly organic insect deterrent, as once it is caked on the skin, it creates a barrier to insects. The mud, once dried, will often be scratched off against a tree perhaps, and that can also help dislodge existing insects that were settled on their skin prior to the mud splashing. We explain the behaviour Mud-Splashing in detail and we have shared some examples from our HERD archives, to see the actions in motion. Thank you to the team at Elephant Voices for sharing all their research on their public platform called the Elephant Ethogram, which provides the world with all this incredible insight into elephant behaviours. Use this link to view the Elephant Ethogram by Elephant Voices: https://www.elephantvoices.org/elepha... * Our elephant behaviour videos showcase various elephant behaviours through our video archives that feature a unique semi-habituated herd, called the Jabulani Herd. By making use of the information available on the Elephant Ethogram, a public platform created and shared freely by the team at Elephant Voices, we are showcasing some of the more commonly seen physical behaviours by sharing a few examples of individual behaviours in succession. All behaviours are always open to interpretation and based on numerous contributing factors which are taken into consideration.*
