The court ruled that if someone's Fourth Amendment rights are violated by federal officers and they suffer harm as a result, they can seek money damages as a remedy. The District Court initially said the case could not move forward because the officers were immune from liability, but the Court of Appeals did not address this issue. The Supreme Court disagreed with both lower courts and sent the case back down for further proceedings. Bivens v.
