2024.11.04 A decade of impunity: The safety of journalists in crises and emergencies(Eng. Ver.) Since 1993, more than 1,700 journalists have been killed while performing their duties. Shockingly, in nine out of ten cases, their killers face no consequences. To mark the decade since UNESCO commemorated the first International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists on November 2, 2014, UNESCO Bangkok and the Foreign Correspondents' Club of Thailand invites journalists, civil society groups, FCCT members and the general public to an evening of reflection on the host of dangerous realities that journalists in our region face in their pursuit of the truth. UNESCO and the FCCT will present a panel of international, regional and national journalists and human rights defenders from countries in the region (likely including Myanmar, Thailand, the Philippines and others) to reflect on their experience and make recommendations to address these ongoing dangers to journalists. Central to the discussion will be UNESCO’s 2024 theme of “The Safety of Journalists in Crises and Emergencies.” Introductory Speech by Jo Hironaka, advisor/chief of unit, communication and information, UNESCO Regional Office in Bangkok. Panelists: Jonathan Head, Southeast Asia correspondent, BBC. Carlos Conde, senior researcher for the Philippines, Human Rights Watch. Thapanee Eadsrichai, journalist and founder of The Reporters. Toe Zaw Latt, secretary, Independent Press Council of Myanmar (IPCM).
