Game development is difficult! As a self taught hobbyist releasing my first iOS game was one of the most challenging things I've accomplished. However, there's at least one thing I definitely struggled with more than anything - and to be honest - failed to get right with ZER0ED. The Difficulty Curve. By getting the game's difficulty curve wrong I lost a lot of early players. The game was too hard to understand and became frustrating instead of fun. This is a balancing act though, because if the game is too easy then it will very quickly become boring. A difficult game can be fun if done correctly though - think Dark Souls for example, but ZER0ED had another flaw. The controls and way that I attempted to teach them to players was not intuitive.
