Feeding of the 5,000: Summary and Meaning

One of the most miraculous events in the life and ministry of Jesus Christ is the feeding of the 5,000 people. In the story Jesus invites his disciples to come away with him to a deserted place, but when they arrive they find thousands of people hoping to see and hear Jesus teach there. Jesus sees them and calls them a "sheep without a shepherd." He then begins to teach and heal the sick who have come to see him. Meanwhile, the apostles get worried. There are many people and no food for them. They ask Jesus to send them away to find food, but Jesus instead asks his disciples to feed them. They can only find a boy with five loaves and two fish to feed the 5,000 men and their families. Then the miracle occurs. Jesus blesses and breaks the bread. Then the disciples distribute the multiplied loaves of bread to the crowd. There is so much left over that they can fill twelve baskets. The Meaning of the Feeding of the 5,000 Story What lessons can we learn from the Feeding of the 5,000 story? Here are a few ideas to consider as Christian disciples: 1) Share a concern for the poor and hungry. While the Apostles lacked faith in Jesus at first to care for so many people, we can admire them for their concern. They see a large group of hungry people and they wish to help them. 2) Make use of what you have to serve others. You only need a little to help a lot of people. Look at what you have. How can you serve others? 3) Trust in Jesus to work miracles. It can be overwhelming to see so much suffering in the world. There are so many people who need help. Place your trust in the Lord. Bring the people to him and let him fulfill all their needs. The Meaning of the 12 Baskets The number twelve refers both to the Twelve Tribes of Israel and the Twelve Apostles. Many will draw a connection between the Eucharist and the Feeding of the 5,000. The Apostles and the Church continue to distribute the bread to feed the multitudes in the Mass.
