The Killermeters are a British mod revival band who formed in Huddersfield, England. They began as a punk band in 1977 influenced by Dr Feelgood and, like thousands of others across the country they swapped their clothes, modified their Rock/R'n'B sound and took a lot of speed. The Killer Meters' (as they were known at that stage) main attraction was bass player Vic Szczesnowicz (his punk monitor was Vic Vomit). Their lead/rhythm guitar player was Mick Moore who worshipped Keith Richards however their initial line up did not last long and they split in 1978. The band reformed in the October as the mod band The Killermeters including two more musicians, the brothers Sid & Tony Ruttle, and kicking back into life with a new song that said it all: Back In Business. They were the best and most energetic band in the industrial Yorkshire town of Huddersfield and played all the club and pub venues in the North. During their time they were warned by John Peel that the Mod image would lead them down a blind alley but they were also raved about in Sounds by Gary Bushell, supported Secret Affair and The Undertones and finally went on tour with Eddie & The Hot Rods. The band's second single "Twisted Wheel" released in 1980 on Gem records, was a homage to the 1960's legendary Mod night club. The Twisted Wheel was a nightclub in Manchester, England, open from 1963 to 1971. It was one of the first clubs to play the music that became known as Northern Soul. The nightclub was founded by the brothers Jack, Phillip and Ivor Abadi as a blues and soul live music coffee bar/dance club. The original location of the club was on Brazennose Street, between Deansgate and Albert Square. This was the rhythm and blues mod venue, with Roger Eagle as DJ. The last all-nighter at the Brazennose St. venue was 11 September 1965 with John Mayall's Bluesbreakers (featuring Eric Clapton) headlining. The club, along with Roger Eagle as DJ, then re-located to 6 Whitworth Street opening on Saturday 18 September with The Spencer Davis Group (featuring Steve Winwood) as headliners. This venue was the mostly soul-oriented club with resident Saturday "All Niter" DJ Bob Dee compiling and supervising the playlist and utilising the newly developed slip-cueing technique to cue in vinyl records. The Whitworth Street venue was a converted warehouse, with a coffee snack bar on the ground floor and a series of rooms in the cellar. These lower rooms housed the stage, a caged disc jockey area, and the main dance room. Back-lit iron wheels decorated the simple painted brick walls. Ivor Abadi ran the club without an alcohol licence, serving only soft drinks and snacks.
