Steaming Along: The Great Little Trains of Wales

The Great Little Trains of Wales (2011-18) A look at some of Wales finest Narrow Gauge lines. Starting with the first preserved railway: Tallylyn Railway. Running from Tywyn to Rhydyronen, Brynglas, Dolgoch, Abergynolwyn and Nant Gwernol, we take a look at the railway in some glorious weather. Locomotives featured are No. 1 Talyllyn, No, 2 Dolgoch, No.3 Sir Hadyn (not in steam), No. 4 Edward Thomas, No. 6 Douglas (including her running as Duncan from The Railway Series), No. 7 Tom Rolt and No. 9 Alf. We move to the nearby Corris Railway, which like the Talyllyn Railway is also 2'3" and where No. 3 & No. 4 acquired from. The line is currently just over a mile long running from Corris to Maespoeth Junction, where guided tours of the Engine & Carriage Sheds take place. We move to a smaller gauge next, the Bala Lake Railway, on a gauge of 1'11 5/8" from Llanuwchllyn to Bala Lake Halt. The line runs over the former standard gauge Ruabon to Barmouth line, as does the preserved Llangollen Railway (   • Steaming Along: Llangollen Railway  ). We take a look at a host of the home fleet and visiting motive power including Quarry Hunslets Alice, Maid Marian, Holy War, Winifred and Kerr Stuart Diana. We move down to the end of the Ruabon and Barmouth Railway and near to where the line joined the Cambrian Coast Line between Morfa Mawddach and Fairbourne, is the Fairbourne Railway. The line for much of its life was 15inch gauge, we first off see a host of 15inch gauge locomotives including former home-based locomotive Katie, before taking a look at the current fleet of locomotives which run on 12 1/4" gauge line. The locomotives are miniature versions of Lynton Barnstaple (Yeo), Welsh Highland Russell & Beddgellert & Darjeeling (Sherpa) locomotives. The Vale of Rheidol Railway runs from Aberystwyth to Devils Bridge and like the Welshpool & Llanfair Railway was part of the Great Western Railway. Llanberis is full of railways. No link to the national network anymore, but it is the start of the Snowdon Mountain Railway and a line along the Lake. It is also home to the National Slate Museum. At the National Trust's Penrhyn Castle, there is a collection of industrial locomotives including the Penrhyn Railway's Charles. We take a visit to Llandudno next, first to the Great Orme Tramway, viewed from ground level and the Cable Cars. On the West Shore at Llandudno, there is also a miniature railway circuit were we see a 'Royal Scot' in action. Sticking with miniature for our last two featured lines, we first move to Rhyl Miniature Railway (which opened on 1st May 1911) before moving to the Conway Valley Railway Museum at Betws y Coed. One line missing from this compilation is the Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railway, which is because the F&WHR featured in the first series of Steaming Along. For Steaming Along: Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railway visit here...    • Steaming Along: Ffestiniog & Welsh Hi...   Steaming Along With my move to a 4K camera in 2018, this seemed like the perfect opportunity for a series of compilation videos with my archived pre 4K material.
