The applique design is programmed in 3 steps. The placement stitch which is usually a running stitch that goes along the border of the area to be appliqued. Once that placement stitch is ran on the garment, the machine stops so that you can put on your cut fabric - the fabric in this video has a tacky backing. Then, the tackdown stitch - which is also a running stitch but it runs just on the inside of the applique fabric. This will adhere the fabric to the garment. Then, last is the cover stitch that will finish off the applique - usually with a satin stitch.
