We live in Bishops Waltham, a town in Hampshire England. It has a ruined Bishops Palace and is steeped in history. It is also a gateway town to the South Downs National Park. This video is a gentle walking tour around the palace and streets of Bishops Waltham. Bishop's Waltham is a medieval market town situated at the source of the River Hamble in Hampshire, England. It has a foot in the South Downs National Park and is located at the midpoint of a long-established route between Winchester and Portsmouth. It is home to the ruins of Bishop's Waltham Palace, a Scheduled Ancient Monument under English Heritage management, and a well-preserved high street with many listed buildings which now house independent shops. Bishop's Waltham's long history includes a roll call of Medieval and Tudor kings and queens who visited the town to stay at the palace. The name of the town is derived from the Anglo-Saxon words: "wald" (forest) and "ham" (settlement). Because the Bishops of Winchester had a palace here, there were many royal visitors, including King Henry VIII and Richard the Lionheart. Many of the street names in Bishops Waltham are names after the Bishops of Winchester that lived at the Palace, including Langton Road and Edington Close. Modern day Bishop's Waltham has a population of over 6,723 and is the largest settlement in the Winchester district outside the city itself. It is home to an infant and junior school. Bishops Waltham was held by the Royalists during the English Civil War. Bishops Waltham is also the home to Stainers Bakery and in my opinion the best Lardy Cakes in the world. Can buy them in the High Street. There are several pubs in the town The Barleycorn Inn is has a lively local feel. The Crown Inn is an old pub as well, long history The Bunch of Grapes, historic local pub in the picturesque St Peters Street The Priory, lively local pub #wanderlust #bishopswalthammatters #walthamwayfarers #historymatters #stainers #barleycorn #hikingculture #bishopswaltham #southdowns #southdownsnationalpark #walkingtour #hikingculture #walking
