Welcome Everyone to Grade 1 listed Moot Hall in Maldon! This 600 year old building is one of the oldest brick built in Essex, UK. In this video I take a tour with Sue, who has a wealth of knowledge on the building. Thought to have been built around 1420 the tower is part of a brick-built extension to an existing timber manor house known as D’arcy Mansion – the family home of Sir Robert D’arcy (1391-1448) The Borough Corporation purchased the Tower in 1576 and the tower has continued to be owned by the Town of Maldon ever since. It has served as prison, police station, court house, charter house, armoury, council chamber and public meeting space for nearly 450 years!
