In today's military spouse spotlight, Kelsey goes over what you can plug into the wall when you move (PCS) to Germany. I promise you don't need to get rid of all of your appliances! It'll just take a little bit of some planning. It's important to note that not only is the voltage different, but the outlets themselves are as well. In the states, they are known as type A and B which utilize flat pins. In Germany, they have type C and F which are round pins. When you do arrive and decide to travel, having a converter is important to allow you to plug in your American products *if they are dual voltage. If they aren't dual voltage appliances, even with a converter, it won't change the voltage type and it'll destroy your appliance. Taking a few seconds to check your appliance can make a big difference! Finding low cost appliances when you've arrived can take some digging, but Facebook marketplace, spouse Facebook pages, thrift stores, and Freecycle on military posts are all wonderful resources. This also works when you do PCS and want to get rid of any 220v appliances you've accumulated! One thing I noticed is that we have a detached garage in our government housing off post which only has German outlets. So if we want to use our vacuum to clean our cars, we have to run an extension cord out a window outside to plug it in safety without needing a transformer.
