How to Use the UltraStudio Monitor 3G | Intro to Color Part 4

In Part 4 of the introduction to color grading we tackle one of the most cost effective setups for getting close to accurate Rec.709 monitoring in Resolve. What is it? Using a Blackmagic Design UltraStudio Monitor 3G with an ASUS ProArt HD display that has 100% Rec.709 support. Now you might be thinking, "Hold on...why monitor in HD when we're grading in DaVinci Wide Gamut with 4K and 6K footage?" Remember, color spaces and grading are technically independent of pixel count. And even if they weren't, we're monitoring in Rec.709 and that's an HDTV color space. But that's not the reason. The reason we're monitoring in HD is to have an affordable monitoring solution for indie filmmakers that bypasses the GPU and allows us to calibrate our display and use a 3D LUT file for accuracy. Other solutions that involve Calman software and/or 4K monitoring go up in price pretty fast. This lesson shows you how to hookup the Ultra Studio Monitor 3G, install the software and configure Resolve to use the device. We also go over sample settings on an ASUS ProArt to place the display in Rec.709 mode. In the next lesson we cover using DisplayCAL and a colorimeter from Calibrite to create a 3D LUT file and load that into Resolve.
