Montelukast: What Is It And How Does It Treat Asthma? Choose Better - With Dr Daniel Atkinson

Montelukast is a treatment that helps prevent asthma symptoms. Here we have Dr Daniel Atkinson, the Clinical Lead at Treated, to tell us what it is and how it works. Unlike most asthma prevention treatments (which tend to come as inhalers that contain corticosteroids) Montelukast comes as chewable tablets, non-chewable tablets, and granules. These don’t contain corticosteroids, but instead use a medicine called leukotriene receptor agonists. Leukotrines are chemicals in your body that can narrow your airways, and Montelukast inhibits these chemicals. This helps prevent your airways from narrowing, and prevents asthma symptoms from occurring. You’ll usually take one tablet a day: 10mg for those that are at least 15 years old, 5 mg for children aged six to 14, and 4 mg (as a chewable tablet or granules) for children over two.
