Phoenix is the main city in the metropolitan area. Before European settlers came to claim land, two Native American tribes, Hohokam and Patayan, co-existed in the area. Hohokam and Patayan are archaeological terms used to describe their culture. Hohokam represents a culture that lived across central and southern Arizona, with O'odham tribe ancestors. The Patayan represent the culture that lived on the western side of Arizona, leading into California and parts of northern Mexico. Their ancestors are the Yuman tribes. When Spanish explorers first saw the Arizona landscape in the 1690s, they noticed the tribes abandoned some of their ways of living, such as their large adobe structures, and transitioning into more simple ways of living. Populations even declined a bit. Scientists think that the tribes transitioned into less material goods because it was more sustainable for a harsh desert environment. In 1867, Jack Swilling saw much of what Winfield Scott saw (Scottsdale video with more information on Scott:    • Scottsdale to Phoenix, Arizona - Old ...  ) - farming opportunities. Except, Jack Swilling came upon this opportunity first, and decided to head back home in Wickenburg, around 70 miles up north. There he organized the Swilling Irrigation Canal Company, and moved to the Salt River Valley, known today as Phoenix, AZ. By 1868, the company managed to get water into the valley by digging canals from the Salt River located east of Scottsdale and Phoenix. They were able to grow crops that summer, and Swilling's became famous, forming a small colony. That same year, the town was established as Phoenix.
