Guru Angad dev ji (2nd sikh guru) appointed Guru Amar Das Ji as the 3rd sikh guru on March 1552 because of his devotion and service to Guru Angad Dev ji. Guru Amardass ji made the tradition of Guru Ka Langar compulsory for the visitors to the guru saying 'Phele Pangat Phir Sangat'. Guru ji encouraged widow remarriage and preached people against Sati and Purdah System for women. Guru Amar Das ji had four children (2 Sons and 2 Daughters) but did not consider any of his sons capable enough for Guruship instead he chose Guru Ramdas ji (his son-in-law) as his successor.
