Welcome To Bradley International Airport Murphy Terminal B

Welcome To Bradley International Airport! Video created in 1988, when it was fun and easy to fly! Thumbnail picture is of the Connecticut DOT Bureau of Aviation and Ports operations center, Terminal "B", also known as the world famous Murphy Terminal. Airport Administrator at the time was Robert F. Juliano, A.A.E. Terminal "B" Murphy Terminal was the "hub" of Bradley International Airport housing the administrative offices and airport operations facilities. Terminal "A" service included ticket counters, gates, and baggage handling for United Airlines, US Air, Peoples Express, Continental, and Piedmont in its heyday. A Cafeteria and lounge operated by Marriott Host provided dining and "refreshments" throughout the airport. There were also Paradis gift stores accessible to the public and air travelers in various points in the airport. The connecting corridor between Terminals "A" and "B" provided great panoramic views of the active airport apron, gateways, and runways, including inside airport access to the Sheraton Hotel. I remember on occasion seeing the Concorde which had been diverted due to weather from NY, race down the runway with full afterburners on, and placing my hand on the glass feeling the intense vibration of that jet taking off. Opened in the 1950's, Terminal B, also known as the world renowned "Murphy" Terminal, was the aeronautical gateway to Connecticut and Southern New England. In addition to the onsite CT DOT headquarters, The Murphy Terminal was also the base of operations to The Connecticut State Police Troop "W", Bradley International Airport Police Services, National Weather Service, US Customs Service, and United States Air Traffic Coordinators. Airlines providing service from the upper level Terminal B gates included Delta Airlines, American Airlines and Eastern Airlines. Pan AM Express, Midway, other regional airlines including various international arrivals and departures, and charter flights utilized Gate B-21 which was located at the end of the connecting corridor. Lower level Terminal "B" gates included service for Northwest and TWA, and additional airport offices including ground transportation and maintenance. Terminal "B" also highlighted a full service Cafeteria, lounge, and waiting areas. At one time there was an outdoor observatory at Terminal "B" which allowed airport visitors to go outside and watch planes arrive and depart through coin operated viewing binoculars. All airlines which operated from Terminal "B" had their baggage claim areas on the lower level. There was also a wide variety of Rental Car agency's, Taxi, and transportation services available. With the advent of today's realities in air travel, Terminal "B" hallmarks back to a simpler travel time. It's cozy warm corridors simply don't allow for the complexities and security requirements for commercial air travel today. At the time, the general public was actually allowed to walk through the terminal buildings, and actually go to the gate as well as long as they passed through security checkpoint. Security to all Gates in the airport was a simple single line metal detector serviced by one or two security screening agents at the entrance to each gate area wing. Now, Terminal "B" alone could not house the TSA operations in itself. Unfortunately, the current plans are to demolish Terminal "B" Murphy Terminal, to make way for a newly designed airport terminal building. This in one way is completely understandable because Terminal B can no longer provide the infrastructure required for a modern airport, but sad in another sense in terms of its beloved history. This video was originally created as training aid for retired senior volunteers (RSVP Retired Senior Volunteer Program), and college interns who staffed the information desks located on Terminal A and B.
