On October 11, 2023, 11-year-old Deema fell four stories from her balcony when her neighbor’s house in Gaza City was hit by an airstrike: “I was convinced that I was going to die.” Deema was rushed to Al-Shifa Hospital to receive emergency medical care for her fractured femur and shoulder, and an open wound on her forehead. In May 2024, Deema was medically evacuated to Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF)’s hospital in Amman, where she continues to receive reconstructive surgery, physiotherapy, and mental health support. Our physiotherapy team hopes that Deema will one day regain the full function of her limbs. The small number of patients from Gaza receiving vital rehabilitation at MSF’s hospital in Amman represent a small percentage of the needs across the Gaza Strip. According to WHO, 14,000 people in Gaza need medical evacuation. So far, almost 60% of the requests have been rejected by the Israeli authorities.
