Human-AI Cooperation in eDiscovery: The First Twenty-ish Years

Part of the Distinguished Lectures Series at IEAI. Speaker: David Lewis, Reveal. Recorded June 30th, 2021. ABSTRACT: Electronic discovery (eDiscovery) is the application of technical means to the discovery of evidence in legal cases. The explosive growth of born-digital documents and messaging, as well as legal changes in the US and elsewhere in the early 2000's, turned eDiscovery into a test case for human-AI teaming. I will discuss the technical and cost challenges in eDiscovery, the AI technologies applied (particularly active learning), the body of case law and informal practice that has developed, and the ethical issues in this highly regulated area. BIOGRAPHY: Dave Lewis, Ph.D. is Executive Vice President for AI Research, Development, and Ethics at Reveal. He has variously in his career been a corporate researcher, startup development team leader, research professor, freelance consultant, expert witness, and software company co-founder. In 2006, he was elected a Fellow of the American Association for Advancement of Science for foundational work in text analytics. In 2017 he received an ACM SIGIR Test of Time Award for his paper with Gale introducing uncertainty sampling.
