American Christian minister and activist  ii. Charismatic leader in the civil rights movement from 1955 until his assassination in 1968 iii. Most famous work is his “I Have a Dream” (1963) speech in which he expressed his dream of a United States that is free of segregation and racism. iv. Also won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964 ************************ SHORT QUESTIONS ************************ i. What was the cause of Negroes’ discontentment? The cause of Negroes' discontentment was the oppression and cruelty at the hands of the white-men. Negroes were the victims of strong prejudice and racialism. They were not given human rights. They were considered to be inferior citizens. ii. What are the qualities of the veterans of creative suffering? The veterans of creative suffering are never hopeless. They remain steadfast and committed to their cause in the teeth of oppression and cruelty. They face all the trials and tribulations with patience and courage because they believe that unearned suffering is redemptive. iii. What is the dream of Martin Luther King Jr.? The dream of Martin Luther King Jr. is deeply rooted in the American dream. He dreamed that his nation will get freedom one day. His country will be free of social and racial discrimination. All the people will be treated equally. The people will be judged not by the colour of their skin but by the content of their character. iv. What should be the faith of negroes? The Negroes should have a firm faith that they will rise up one day. They should believe that all men are created equal. So, they Should be treated alike. V. What was the necessity of pleading the case of the Negroes’ freedom? It was utmost necessary to plead the case of Negroes’ freedom because They were treated as slaves. Their life was worse than the animals. They were persecuted everywhere. They wanted to get equal rights for them as were enjoyed by the white men. vi. What should be the criterion of judgement for a person? According to Martin Luther King Jr., a person should be judged not by the colour of his skin but by the content of his character. vii. Do the Negroes enjoy equal rights in all the parts of their country? Though America claims to be the most advanced and democratic country, it has failed to give equal rights to the Negroes. They are still considered to be inferior citizens. So, it can be said that Negroes do not enjoy equal rights in all parts of their country. viii. From which part of the country did the Negroes gather there? It was a huge gathering where people had come from the whole country especially from the states where Negroes were in majority like Mississippi, Alabama, South Carolina, Georgia and Louisiana. ix. Write down the song in your own words. My country is a sweet land of liberty. I sing for my country as my forefathers died here. It is a land of pilgrims’ pride. I want the song of liberty to echo everywhere. X. What is the effect of the repetition of words? Several words and sentences have been repeated in the speech. Such device attracts the attention of the audience and it creates a very positive effect on the hearts of the listeners.
