Camino Primitivo I, Oviedo to Paladin

May 8-9, 2024, Santiago to Oviedo, then Paladin. Yesterday we kicked back in the morning, went to a cafe for lunch and then took an Alsa bus to Oviedo, the start of the Camino Primativo. The bus cost $65 each, which I thought was rather expensive but it was a really nice 4 1/2 hour journey. It was much better than economy airline travel. We arrived in Oviedo at 20:30 and walked the 15 minutes to the vicinity of NUVÓ hotel boutique. but couldn’t find it. A guy came out of the gym we were standing in front of and told us the hotel was upstairs. Costing only €125 for a suite, including breakfast, it was a fabulous deal. I had booked direct as it would have cost significantly more through Booking. The suite consisted of two independent rooms, each with its own bathroom. Breakfast was very good too and we made sandwiches for lunch. Upon leaving the hotel we headed directly to the Cathedral. It was about 8:30. We were told that the stamp and shroud that is reputed to have been wrapped around Jesus' face wouldn't be avalable until 10 am so we skipped it. We walked through Oviedo for only about 2 miles before leaving the city and its high-rise apartments behind. We were quickly transported, or rather walked, into rural Asturias, Spain. There were still more pilgrims than we had anticipated. Over half of them were German but these were a different kind of pilgrim vis-à-vis those we encountered on the Portuguese camino. These pilgrims are a tougher bunch. They carry bigger packs and have no trouble climbing the steep inclines. We reached our lodging for the night, Villa Palatina, at 15:30. I'd booked direct 3 beds in an 8-bed room in the albergue for €61 which we thought was rather expensive. There wasn't a whole lot of choice and we wanted to mix it up. Instead of cocooning ourselves in apartments we wanted to mix more with our fellow pilgrims.  Despite this, for tomorrow night I already booked an apartment because I couldn’t find three available beds in the albergues in the next town, Cornellana. We were told we had to wait until 20:00 for dinner but even at 20:30 there was no sign of any food appearing. They were still only taking orders. Not being used to eating this late, we gave up and made do with what we had. On the plus side we had the 8-bed room to ourselves. So much for mixing with other pilgrims!  We were better off with the apartments with their own kitchens. We could make and eat dinner at our usual times. Upon looking into it, thanks to the Internet, we learned that Spain is unique in that, for Spaniards, lunch is their largest meal. We've been here almost two weeks and we hadn't realized this. We typically just eat snacks for lunch. Eating like Spaniards will require a big adjustment. 13 miles
