Small College Conversations - Tony Hoops

Tony Hoops, Vice President for Athletics at Northwestern College, joins NAIA.ticker’s Kristen Eargle to dive into the early success the Raiders have had in year one of Hoops’s tenure. Hoops talks three initiatives he’s implemented in year one: the Student-Athlete Leadership Team (SALT), and Northwestern's first Raiders Giving Day. The two dive into investigating retention, finding the right roster size and growing revenue streams. 00:00 - Introduction 00:43 - Year 1, two NAIA national championship games, earn eight team NAIA Championships berths, and nine GPAC regular season and tournament titles. I’d say things are going well…what do you attribute the early success and buy-in? 02:55 - This is your 8th year as an AD. Walk us through how you spend your days and weeks. What are your main areas of focus? How has that shifted over time or as you moved to NWC? 05:05 - In a previous interview, you mentioned the opportunity to increase retention after your first few months at Northwestern. For each, what tangible actions have been made by you or your staff to increase that? 08:46 - Moving to generating revenue: At your prior stop at Bethel College, you increased private fundraising departmental gifts by 650%, helped raise over $6 million for facility updates, generated over $400,000 annually for the athletic department, and increased booster club membership by 500%. Here at Northwestern, you implemented Raiders Giving Day, increased fundraising by 45% in year one, helped raise over $5M for renovations to the Bultman Center and more. Where do you find the most traction in a town of 6000 residents? 12:49 - At Northwestern, you implemented the Student-Athlete Leadership Team (SALT). What was an indication that this was needed? How did you structure this? 16:22 - You sit on the NAIA-ADA Board of Directors, you are on the BOSCA Advisory Board, you are a leader in this space. What are the biggest opportunities and challenges for the NAIA?
