Bought this 97 TJ off the original owner two years ago and he told me it had a slight intermittent gauge issue. I didn’t see the issue until about six months after I owned it where it would work half the time and I was just bang my hand on the dash bezel and it would work again thinking it was something behind the dash. Had an intermittent gauge/dash cluster issue on my 1997 Jeep Wrangler TJ. Took me quite a few hours of cleaning grounds, pulling dash, electrically greasing and bending contacts behind the dash, and then chasing wires. I knew it had to be something simple. Always keep it simple at first. Check fuses, wasn’t those. Finally when I was chasing wires down to the foot panel, I noticed some of the OEM electrical tape was chewed through, and one of the wires was barely hanging on and started to corrode and turn greenish in color. I tapped it with my fingers and the wire snapped. I quickly grab some short alligator clips and ran a jumper on the purple wire with black striping and sure enough all my gauges popped back up to position. When I disconnected it, the rpm drops back down to zero but the other two stayed in position. Then I reconnected one last time and left it there and I was able to determine for sure this is the wire I am looking for. 1997 TJ jeep wrangler 4.0 L in-line six nearly original purchased from the original owner.
