1970s ATLAS (mod. ThyssenKrupp) Traction Elevators - BCCO Bank Bldg II, Downtown - GO, BR

A pair of 1960 or 70s ATLAS elevators, modernized by ThyssenKrupp in the 2000s, at an office building in downtown. This building used to be the state's main offices for a major bank, that later moved out completely, with it becoming a condominium of leasing offices. The interior is mostly original and preserved, with a wide and open staircase in front of the elevators - a rare sight in most buildings around here. These are the only elevators in the building. Strangely, they don't go to the garage basement below, access there is only by stairs. Quite large sized cars for the scale of this building, with very wide doors and cab space, these are bigger than a small building like this around here would go for, certainly the bank wanted a very high-end installation for their building back then. Modernized by ThyssenKrupp in the 2000s, they got an interior renovation, new fixtures, and a new controller. Interiors were completely renovated in the mod, standard basic renovation finish that's used in most mods, with the stainless steel walls and new ceiling panels with a fan added in the center. They're looking mostly good for the age and usage, only a few damage signs on some spots around the walls, and an area of the cab's floor is a little "sunken". All of the doors are still original, seemingly still on the original APC-63 operator. Hard to know what were the original fixtures were, only that it was the Pop-out buttons, default of Atlas at the time. The mod fixtures are older Top Line series, of the touch-sensitive version. These are actually based on the older Fujitec square buttons that Sûr used from the 1980s up to the early 2000s, after those were discontinued, they made this one intended to succeed the original with a new, modern design, while mantaining some of the original look and basis to them (mainly the green LED lighting on the floor buttons and the red/steel pushbuttons). It's somewhat rare to see this fixture line in this type of slap-on/screw COP, as it was rarely used in mods like this. They're normally only used in TK's original "Griffe" line of cab designs that they were originally projected for, with the full top to bottom COP on the corner of the front wall. Hall fixtures are only the regular call station, and a floor indicator above each car on the hall on the main level P only. That large hall indicator in itself is also another somewhat rare fixture, used in a few commercial-spec mods in the 2000s. It looks a lot like some generic ones, not a part of the line of fixtures used for this mod, but is original from TK, with the proprietary TK-99 Plus dot-matrix indicator and their logo on it. It doesn't seem to have chimes, not even grilles for speakers. Both internal and external fixtures are in good condition, given the high usage these get. All parts still working as good as new, not many damages around them, save for the capacity plaque portion and some parts of the COP being a little deformed/sunken from strong pressure against them (common issues with these fixtures anyway). These elevators do run decently well, their travel speed is quite fast for their distance, despite taking some time to level at the floors and effectively functioning as a 2-speed, but for most, the efficiency is satisfactory. The ride is pretty smooth too, even as the cars tend to shake around a little when moving at travel speed, and the interior of the cars creaking loudly when slowing down/stopping. I'm not sure about the motors, if they're replaced or still are the original ones. Either case, they're running these cars as good as can be, the speed switches are seamless and they give out a pretty comfortable ride overall. Pretty quiet too, even when that loud fan stops, you still don't hear any sounds from the equipment up in the machine room. Maintenance is done by thyssenkrupp (now TKE), these are on their service since the early 2000s, a few years before the mod was done. Specifications: Manufacturer: ATLAS - Villares (mod. ThyssenKrupp) Maintainer: thyssenkrupp/TKE Model: "ACBB" (originally) Fixtures: Atlas Pop-Out, repl. touch-sensitive Top Line Type: Passenger Commercial Hoisting: Traction Doors: Center-opening Capacity: 840 kg/12 persons (apx. 1850 lbs.) In Service: ~1970s mod. early/mid 2000s Floors Served: 11 (P* -1/10) Controller: Atlas ACBB (relay), repl. ThyssenKrupp Frequencedyne (electronic) Motor System: Atlas CE-365? 2-speed AC traction machine, mod. to VF-controlled Rating: 9/10 - These are pretty interesting elevators, the mod is very well done and notably uses some unsual fixtures, the cars aren't what's normally expected for such a small building like this one. They do run pretty well despite some small issues. I really like these, especially the fixtures they used, which are also a personal favorite of mine. Would've been even more interesting to see if these were still original and/or had an epic motor. Filmed: August 27, 2021 Camera: Samsung Galaxy A52 © 2021 - 2023 L. Naves
