Some critics of mystery and suspense fiction have argued that following the emergence of American hard-boiled detective fiction in the pulp magazines of the 1920s, the era of the classic detective personified by Sherlock Holmes was over. This position is strengthened by Raymond Chandler’s influential 1944 essay “The Simple Art of Murder,” which maintains that the work of authors like Dashiell Hammett improves on and replaces what Chandler sees as the artificiality of the English country house mystery. The truth is very different, however: Classic mysteries were still produced—and are still being produced.
