An easier route into jazz guitar?

It's overwhealming what you're supposed to know before you start soloing in a jazz context. Chord tones/arpeggios, modes etc... there's too much to do and it's often off putting. When you listen to some of the classic jazz guitar greats like Django, Charlie Christian etc, you hear this relatively simple idea ALL of the time. It's a big part of jazz foundations and it gets you playing exiting lines almost immediatly. Just start with the harmonic minor scale and the inbuilt diminished arpeggio, and you'll be able to start creating lines with tension and resolution/movement straight away.
