UVA Guatemala Initiative: Extending Healthcare Resources to International Communities

As part of our continuing effort to foster global relationships, the UVA Guatemala Initiative has extended our resources to provide access to healthcare and education in the heart of Guatemala. We’ve partnered with clinics and communities in rural areas by providing a variety of collaborative video and data-linkage opportunities. Emergency Room Physician David Burt, MD, has helped develop a Portal Assessment Tool that evaluates broadband availability in these regions, enabling them to benefit from our telemedicine resources. The UVA Guatemala Initiative is a group of people here at UVA that, over the past eight to ten years, has developed a series of partnerships in the heart of Guatemala. We’re always looking for opportunities where we can partner with clinics or organizations or communities. Something that’s a win for UVA is a win for the partners that we have in Guatemala. And then, of course, it’s a win for the initiative because we need a team of people in Guatemala that can make these two cultures function together. We offer medical students the chance to go down and do direct patient care at a puesta de salud, or what's called a health outpost. We have residents from emergency medicine that go down and do emergency care in the government hospital in a place called Totonicapan. We have an education initiative over in a place called Lake Atitlan, where every day, 400 Mayan families drink water out of biosand water filters, which is part of an ongoing collaboration with UVA. We even have an electronic medical record in operation called Project Saber, where we have the first EMR platform operating in a government hospital in Guatemala. We’re always looking for places and opportunities, particularly house-associated, where UVA and its partners can find something of value for everyone.
