INDONESIA: AMBON: VIOLENCE

(22 Jun 2000) Natural Sound XFA Sectarian violence is continuing in the remote eastern islands of Indonesia. Indonesia's security forces came under attack on Wednesday as violence flared in Indonesia's remote Maluku islands. Clashes between the security forces and feuding Christians and Muslims in Ambon left at least nine people dead. Elsewhere, the Indonesian navy sent two ships to nearby Halmahera island to evacuate refugees from the bloody sectarian crisis. In Maluku's provincial capital, Ambon, at least nine people were killed in street clashes between Muslims and Christians that erupted on Wednesday. Two Christians and three Muslims were killed in a gang battle fought with homemade guns and swords. As the fighting raged, people ran in all directions in search of cover. Four police officers were among the dead. Muslim gunmen had heard that Christian refugees were sheltering at a police barracks. Before long, the group mounted a full-scale attack on the barracks. The attackers are believed to be members of an Islamic group calling itself Laskar Jihad, or "Holy War Force". Several months ago the group was accused of sending more than 2-thousand Islamic paramilitary troops into Maluku to counter a round of Christian attacks. Their numbers are said to dwarf those of the Indonesian police in Ambon who find themselves, though well equipped, greatly outnumbered. More sectarian fighting flared in other parts of the eastern Malukus, despite increased patrols by security forces, accused earlier of doing little to stop the bloody violence. Jakarta has been heavily criticised for failing to quell the violence. Military commander Admiral Widodo Adisutjipto said on Wednesday that he met Indonesian President Abdurrahman Wahid and ordered more troops into the area. On Thursday, Indonesian navy ships evacuated more than 700 fearful Christian refugees from Duma village on Halmahera island. Church workers said up to 187 people have died since the Monday attack on Duma village, which apparently came in revenge for past atrocities by local Christians against Muslims. The military has put the death toll since Monday at 111, although the total couldn't be independently confirmed. It was the latest round of religious killings in the Malukus - the fabled Spice Islands under Dutch colonial rule. About 90 per cent of Indonesia's 210 (m) million people are Muslim, making it the world's most populous Islamic country. But Christians are a majority in the Maluku islands, which lie 1-thousand-500 miles northeast of the Indonesian capital, Jakarta. More than 2-thousand-500 members of both faiths have been killed in the past 18 months across the archipelago. In December, hundreds of Muslims were slain by marauding Christian gangs, with both sides launching revenge attacks since then. For more than three authoritarian decades Indonesia's military used force to keep a lid on ethnic and religious tensions across the sprawling Southeast Asian nation. Since the ouster of President Suharto two years ago, the power of the armed forces has waned in the face of demands for greater democracy. Some soldiers have been tried and imprisoned for human rights abuses in other parts of Indonesia and commanders have promised to reform their ranks. But under cover of darkness, many still feel they are in danger. The smoke coming from burning houses and a part of the barracks serve as a reminder of the intensity and desperation of the situation. #indonesia #ambon #violence Find out more about AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/HowWeWork Twitter:   / ap_archive   Facebook:   / aparchives    Instagram:   / apnews   You can license this story through AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/metadata/you...
